how did they do it? is it a kinda blue screen thingy, or some fancy video mapping banter?

The funny thing is, the RNC made it particularly easy to do. McCain was speaking in front of that huge wall of LCD panels. Throughout the convention it was used for video, etc, and when people were speaking they would stick a single image or blank black screen (such as Sarah Palin's.)

However, some GENIUS of a tech (either a covert democrat or an idiot!) put up, for McCain, the image of a single American flag on pole, aligned to the right of the screen, against a clear BLUE sky... making it relatively easy for anyone who would want to to map out the flag and use the solid blue screen as... you've guessed it... a blue screen. (That's how I would do it, anyway.)
